Editorial Review:
Album Description: Gordon Goodwin has built a bigger-than-life reputation with his composing, arranging and musical instrumentation skills. He combines all these talents on XXL, his second creation as ringleader for the Big Phat Band. After three Emmy Awards and two Grammy nominations, Gordon is still Hungry for more. The Big Phat Band is Gordon's creation...and his muse. XXL finds a stable full of LA's best Jazz players - Eric Marienthal, Eddie Daniels, Michael Brecker, Peter Erskine and others eighteen deep - wailing alongside their leader. These players have over a dozen Top-10 Jazz albums under their collective belt. Their passion drives Gordon over the Top! Add Three more guest performances and the mix hits full steam. Seven-time Grammy winning vocal group Take 6 checks in for two cuts. Billboard chart-topper Brian McKnight breathes new soul into the Jazz classic "Comes Love." And Johnny Mathis, the man who needs no introduction, arrives to "Let The Good Times Roll." XXL finds Gordon Goodwin at the top of his game. Virtuoso performances abound on the record, by Gordon and all his key companions. Traditional big band music feels more alive than ever. The electric energy at Gordon's sold-out west coast gigs can only testify that the man has something cooking.

Here, ladies and gentleman, we find the jazz world's equivalent of a Supergroup - nearly every member of the Phat Band is a legend in their own right. Consequently, the playing is fantastic and very tight. If there is any criticism, it is perhaps that the playing tends towards the more commercial side. But then, after all, these are musicians from the commerical scene on the West Coast. Goodwin's arrangements are wonderful as usual. I have personally played Hunting Wabbits and Horn of Puente and ... Read More

I picked up this older Gordon Goodwin Big Phat Band release to complete my collection of the band's recordings so far. If you love modern jazz and big band, this CD is a must have recording. Gordon's compositions range from traditional swing to funk and rock and roll. His band has some the best LA players including Eric Marienthal on lead alto. Check out Eric's solo on High Maintenance (track #1). He combines modern sax style a la Sanborn or Brecker with clear influence from Charlie Parker and ... Read More

I call this album "inspirational" because it's inspiring to hear modern, top-notch musicians striving to make a statement in the medium of big band jazz. Mr. Goodwin has done a fine job of writing and arranging an album that's not just old-school sentimental or modern/weird--it's musically satisfying, but also fun to listen to.
Some of the songs may be a little over-arranged, but Goodwin's charts are so creative and the playing so top-notch that it's okay. There are a couple dogs on here, ... Read More

I purchased this album for my dad for Christmas. Although he grew up in the big band era of Miller, Dorsey, etc., he really loves the few contemporary big bands that record today. Gordon's band is one of the best. I have had the pleasure of working with the bassist for the Big Phat Band, Rick Shaw, who first told me of the group when we played together for Johnny Mathis in Florida (Rick also tours with Mathis, Gordon Goodwin's former boss). Every Big Phat Band album I have heard is remarkable. This ... Read More
