Well as far as a concern for usability goes SuSE is the best Linux distro. To my taste it is much superior to Red-Hat. But getting the distro it is only a beginning! It is very cool OS and you will learn much about it. It is practical to get some general UNIX skills.
I would recommend Linux and UNIX for a beginner complete training suite, 4DVDs + 2CDs ed.2008
SuSE is very user friendly and very updated. It is easy to use and that is very important to me it is FUN to use. Enjoy it.

If your wanting to ditch Windows, and don't want to spring for a Mac, this is what you need. It was easier to install then Windows and comes with just about every normal application you would ever need. Office, email, web, instant messaging, music, even talks to iPods and Palm Pilots right out of the box. It includes DVD's and CD's both. It also comes with two very nice large manuals, a User's Manual and a Administrator's Manual. Not even Apple includes manuals like these any more.
You can install it right along with Windows, right on the same hard drive. It will automatically shrink your Windows partition, add SuSE in it's own partition, and install a boot loader when you can pick which OS you want to run when you turn on your computer.
It looks very nice, and even includes TWO desktop systems, KDE and GNOME. KDE is the default desktop system and is most like Windows, GNOME is most like Mac. That's the nice thing about SuSE, lots of choices, it has multiple desktop systems, web browsers, instant messengers, email programs, etc. Your sure to find one you like, and they all work with their Windows counterparts.
The only catch is hardware support. While it supports more hardware then ever, it does not support my Shuttle PN15g Wireless adapter or the extra media keys on my Logitech keyboard included with my Logitech Cordless MX Duo. It does have a long list of supported wireless adapters, but not many multimedia keyboards. For that I give it four stars, otherwise it would be five.
The Linux desktop has come a long way, and SuSE is a very viable replacement for Windows. The only thing you'll miss from Windows is viruses, spyware, malware, Trojan horses, pop-ups, spam.... :)

OK, I have been using Windows (95,98,2000, and XP) at work and home since my first computer 15 years ago. My home computer recently crashed, power supply and board both had scorch marks. I am not sure what happended. Anyhow, I went out and purchased new power supply, and 2 new ECS motherboard's with AMD 64 3000+'s for $139 each. The original computer had Intel Celeron 2.6GHz. Hard drive, CDRW were ok. I needed OS since the Windows XP that came with my computer won't work on new motherboard. I went out and bought SUSE Linux Pro 9.3 after reading about it and speaking with my neighbor. Wow!Wow! Wow! The package comes with 5CD 32 bit version and 2DVD has the 64 bit OS and a load of great applications for business, fun etc. I will never go back to Windows. I had an extra 40GB hard drive from an older computer (which I am also upgrading, hence the extra motherboard and CPU) and I used it to load SUSE LINUX after allowing SUSE LINUX to reformat the entire drive. Once I got going and played with LINUX a bit, I read up on how to access a Windows partioned drive to retrieve all my old files. Then I mounted the HD that had Windows NTFS partition and all my digital photos and I was able to copy them onto the hard drive with LINUX partition. NOTE: Linux won't write to NTFS. (There is software available but I haven't read much on it.) Then I bought an external WD 120GB hard to back up photos. It is FAT32 formatted and has USB 2.0. I plugged it in and LINUX recognized it just fine since the USB port was configured already. No need to reformat FAT32 external HD. I can also write to it. I am still learning, but this OS is great and has all the great packages included. With the included Open Office software, you can save files in MS Office format and reopen in MS Office. No problem. Open Office is the open free version of StarOffice by Sun Microsystems. Bottom line: unless you are a real Windows based games fan, you should really try Suse Linux. I use the KDE desktop environment and like it better than Windows XP.

I am an experienced Linux developer, so therefore I have played around with many distros, including Debian and Red Hat. After using SuSE for a while, I quickly learned that it is by far the best distro that exists. It comes with the most packages, and both KDE AND GNOME (both of which are great), and is extremely compatible with almost any configuration. It is also amazingly easy to install, as tho only OS OR a dual-boot! Whether you've used Linux before or are new to it, SuSE is the way to go.

1. This Linux ver. is the BEST for most users (though highly tech people are comfortable w/any flavor, this 'Suse" flavor I do recommend above all), but Amazon still doesn't carry a more efficient version of it: DVD set. Don't bother with 5 CD's which do NOT CONTAIN AS MANY DRIVERS AS DVD nor do they contain all sources, BEWARE: DVD's are NOT the same and are better than 5-CD set so get DVD instead of CD if you can. Afraid Amazon won't let this be posted as they don't want to lose sales, well just offer DVD's to public and then post my review instead of shutting it down (also DVD's save environment - less plastic to manufacture/dispose!)
As of myself for this reason I got Suse DVD from another source - cannot mention here (to avoid harm to Amazon) that already carries DVD's. My 2-year old DVDRW slim/portable drive had no problem booting IBM ThinkpadX40 (ultraportable) off Suse DVD, so CD is not really required to boot a modern system, it can do as well with DVD and as a reward you get better content.
2. To me nothing yet would replace WindowsXP when properly configured/preferences set/used by a pro, but adding this version of Linux proved to be excellent (i.e. created a dual-boot system allowing Linux GRUB to manage boot with WinXP default boot after 1 second timeout)
3. Amazon makes wrong emphasis on Suse itself, while the current owner is now NOVELL. Novell completed acquisition of Suse a while ago, and Amazon should carry more and it's time now to carry exclusively NOvel editions of Suse Linux9.3 because it's a powerful player, a premier U.S. corporation with better tech support. If you see this ware labeled 'Suse Linux 9.3" - it's old, try to find "Novell/Suse Linux9.3", while label the same they come from two different companies and Novell is now the ONLY owner of Suse and latest/best.
Novel is well-positioned to break Microsoft's spine, while Suse itself was a small company localized to Germany.
